STV reported this evening that 40,000 police hours and £1 million have been spent on the Sheridan perjury investigation.  They have also noted that there have only been 13 perjury convictions arising from 61 charges in the last 5 years.  

What is not mentioned in the report is that this particular investigation was not started by the police unilaterally, nor through pressure from the News of the World.  This investigation arose because Lord Turnbull - having warned witnesses in the case of perjury, and having expressly referred to it at points during the case (and before the jury decision) then referred matters for investigation.  When the trial judge asks for an investigation there's not much can be done to stop it.

I also note that Ian Hamilton QC (perhaps he's the source of the Alan Cochrane article yesterday - given the regular banter between the two on Hamilton's blog?) writes this evening

"Tommy Sheridan has been vindicated by a jury of his peers. A jury heard the evidence and awarded him damages. It is no part of the duty of our police to prove the jury wrong and a newspaper right.  Edinburgh and Lothians Police are conducting a vendetta against justice itself. I am ashamed of being a lawyer."

Again Lord Turnbull's role is ignored (and Lord Turnbull's comments  - while witnesses were giving evidence).  Anyway...
